DIY for kids Art Class 101

IMG_2968Imagine sitting in a classroom filled with easels and paintbrushes. There are cups or tubes filled with colors just waiting to be released. Now, imagine that instead of an easel in front of every student is a pair of design-your-own rain boots. Let the do-it-yourself DIY for kids art class begin.
Art is an expression of the artist. Art is never wrong, or at least it shouldn’t be only a subject in schoolthat’s scrutinized with grades. Though, all children need to be allowed the experience of exposure to many different forms of art. Painting is one of these important art forms that schools, home schools, or community organizations should offer to all.
So, what do boots have to do with Art 101?
Like painters of still life, what better way is there to express your inner artist than to get your hands on an every day object that has been placed in front of you accompanied with paintbrushes and a few primary colors to work with. Add a tube of black, a tube of white and maybe throw in some green, and the still life seems comes to life as your young artist explores colors and textures. Better yet – What if that every day object was an article of clothing, like a pair of boots, and is not just a still life object to observe, but the boots are your canvas.
The significance of exchanging an easel that holds a flat piece of paper for a pair of boots is that each student now holds in their hands something that they will not only paint, but will personally wear. This, turns art expression into something that is a bit more carefully thought out because, in the end, their work of art will not be hung on a wall or tucked away between two pieces of oversized cardboard, but their work of art will be worn by them for all to see their inner artist.
Start with a pair of MyDesign design-your-own-rain boots, and you have an instant art class. As long as each art student has his or her own boot painting kit, an art class begins in a school setting with several students, in a home school setting that is more one-on-one with very little messy clean up, or in a community organization setting around some folding tables lined with boots ready to paint.
With the erasable pads that come with the boots, the same pair of boots may be used all year as you explore new artists. Paint in the style of the impressionist, like Monet. Wipe the boots clean, and start fresh with a Van Gogh at the next art session and then with a Lichtenstein the following week.
The culminating project would be a fashion show where the students literally bare their artistic souls, or soles if you will. Regardless, the end result is a confidence-building art class with students who are excited to return to class to create art again and again.
